      2. 1.1.2. 2. Upgrade Hosts

The steps for applying a patch and a major version are very similar. The rule is that the vCenter should always be updated before the ESXi hosts, especially with a major version. (ie 5.5 >> 6)

1. Upgrade vCenter

  • on a windows vCenter, download the installer and run the exe files
  • on a virtual appliance
    • download the update ISO and mount it on the VM appliance
    • enable SSH on the virtual appliance, this is done through the console.
    • connect to the vCenter via SSH
    • run software-packages stage --iso
    • run software-packages install --staged

2. Upgrade Hosts

  • Using Update Manager (prefered method)
    • stage updates
    • put host into maintenance mode
    • remediate host
    • remove maintenance mode
    • (repeat as needed)
